The 4 elements

The climate crisis art leading up to the Venice Biennale 2024

"One in eight billion on Earth. I, like many others, worry that humanity seems to be heading towards the irreversible. Hand in hand we are walking with open eyes towards our doom. There is something deeply human in turning a blind eye to the status quo, a way of dealing with everyday life. But still, when the thought finds its way all the way in, when it stabs you in the chest. An unpleasant feeling spreads. What can we do, how can I as an individual make a difference?"

The 4 Elements is an art concept consisting of four separate pieces that can be combined in different ways to achieve different effects through different exhibition designs. The four pieces represent the four elements: WATER, EARTH, AIR and FIRE. At the heart of the concept is one of humanity's biggest threats: climate change. The goal of the project is to instill hope and strength in the youth who today feel depressed and have a dark view of the future. T4e wants to point out a future that is possible if we can draw strength from knowledge, community and responsibility. The project mixes art, technology and design and allows the four elements to be the catalyst for in-depth discussions about the crisis our world is facing.

The installation WATER had its pilot exhibition in the Seychelles in 2022, commissioned by the country's president. After a successful exhibition period, the project was invited to participate in the exhibition Personal Spaces at the European Cultural Centre during the 2024 Venice Biennale.

During this seminar, you can listen to the project's creator, artist Ola Sivhed and sound designer Vassili Neplokh. Together they break down the concept and the thoughts behind it to give an insight into their work process.
