The Sea Prince has finally landed in Malmoe after 100 years!
The project started as an idea in the Malmö Uppfinnarklubb 2018. The idea was to create a figure that alluded to the famous tale of the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen and thus create new emotional bridges across the Öresund. The Little Mermaid was placed in Copenhagen's harbor entrance in 1913 and she has since been sitting unhappily on her rock after a love story with an earthly prince. We wanted to change this. What would have happened if she met a Sea Prince? We asked a number of students in year 6 to write the story of the Sea Prince, which resulted in many wonderful stories. One of the Sea Prince's strengths is that he has no history, unlike the Little Mermaid. This was very inspiring for the children. The bust of the sea prince is now cast and during February-March the rest of him is cast. This has been made possible through sponsorship from around 60 people and companies. It has also been possible to swish the collection. SEK 230,000 including VAT is the cost of casting him in bronze. We believe that with the help of this loving and humorous greeting to the mermaid and the Danes, we reduce the dissonance between Malmö and Copenhagen. Instead, we create a loving bridge that contributes to a better and stronger community across the strait, which in our troubled times is especially important.
