A venture into the swamp of communication
Self awareness, powerlessness and shoes that don’t fit is a subjective interpretation of dissonance within communication. The project consists of a physical exhibition with a fanzine where a selection of pages have been printed as posters. The content is based on the designers’ own feelings, experiences and discussions, which have been put into a visual language using graphic elements, illustration and typography.
The project explores themes such as self reflection, social strategies, setting boundaries, self expression and impressions. One of the subjects we touch upon is how the way we see ourselves can differ from how others see us, one of many points of dissonance that affect our relationships and how we interact with each other. To know what we feel, why, and then be able to translate this into words that someone else can understand is an artform that often falls within our own responsibilities to develop.. Not an easy task, especially when you’re not sure of where to start or what is missing to begin with.
The project will be brought to life using riso-printing, a method that is inherently unpredictable, creating unexpected effects which mimic the dissonance within communication. Each layer is printed on its own which means that the paper has to be fed through the machine repeatedly for each new colour. Because of this, the paper is seldom in the same position each time, creating at times unexpected results where each copy can differ.
