A participatory exhibition - exploring new ways of relating to the canals in Malmö

A participatory exhibition. What do we see when we gaze into water? What stories of life in the Anthropocene lie just below the surface? The project focuses on the canals and other bodies of water as a place of complex community for birds, insects, plants, algae, fish and more. And examines how these watery spaces are integrated into urban spaces.

A participatory exhibition invites visitors to explore possibilities of developing new ways of relating to the canals in Malmö through artistic practice. It aims to sharpen meditative sensory perception between human and non-human networks in order to challenge hegemonic perspectives towards water bodies in urban fabrics.

Participants will be invited to visit an installation in a nearby canal and document the stories they find there. The observations and discoveries of this event will be included as part of the exhibition at STPLN.

A FESTIVAL FOR ECOLOGICAL CULTURE IN MALMÖ https://locallyalien.org/

The objective of this program is to look more deeply at nonhuman species (plants, fungi, animals, bacteria, and the rest) in Malmö and to better understand the market and state forces behind rapid extinction of species globally. Listening to, and looking to creatures around us, they can show us how these forces are at work here in the city.

In this post-industrial city we can find that the myth of “man and nature” is baked into its harbors, roads, and buildings. Through Locally Alien we will explore how domination, extraction, and exploitation have come to define our relationship to nonhuman residents of the city.

The program is composed of creative workshops, exhibitions, walks, and performances focused on the ecological culture of Malmö. Through the perspective of the city’s many different residents we might find new ways of relating to nonhuman ecology.

Tatuli Japoshvili is an emerging curator and writer in art criticism with a background in art history and visual studies as well as artistic practices. Her research interests include intersections between art, the complex behaviour of images in contemporary media and theories of psycho-history, subjectivity, and the feminine.

Giga Tsikarishvili

Giga Tsikarishvili is an interdisciplinary artist based between Tbilisi and Gothenburg. His practice centres around the critical examination of the relationship between humanity and nature. Currently, he is in search of hidden connections between rivers and their networks of living beings and objects. By doing so, he aspires to shift the focus from humans towards non-human beings and acknowledge their agency as witnesses and bearers of memory, leading towards a more viable future.
