Create, exchange, and remake urban recipes for exploring the rich ecologies in Malmö

Urban Recipes is a playful exploration of rich ecologies in the city. By combining the spatial experimentation of drifting with the recursive practice of recipe making, Urban Recipes opens up a space for novel ways of noticing and relating to both humans and nonhumans in everyday urban environments. Urban Recipes: Malmö Picnic invites curious individuals to take a stroll in the industrial area of Västra Hamnen, create, exchange, and remake recipes for noticing fellow nonhuman inhabitants. Collectively, we will reflect on how to cultivate care in the

more-than-human city.

A FESTIVAL FOR ECOLOGICAL CULTURE IN MALMÖ https://locallyalien.org/

The objective of this program is to look more deeply at nonhuman species (plants, fungi, animals, bacteria, and the rest) in Malmö and to better understand the market and state forces behind rapid extinction of species globally. Listening to, and looking to creatures around us, they can show us how these forces are at work here in the city.

In this post-industrial city we can find that the myth of “man and nature” is baked into its harbors, roads, and buildings. Through Locally Alien we will explore how domination, extraction, and exploitation have come to define our relationship to nonhuman residents of the city.

The program is composed of creative workshops, exhibitions, walks, and performances focused on the ecological culture of Malmö. Through the perspective of the city’s many different residents we might find new ways of relating to nonhuman ecology.

Yuxi Liu

Yuxi Liu is a designer, researcher, and artist whose practice is motivated by ongoing ecological urgencies and new potentialities of the artificial. She is especially interested in the entanglement of humans and nonhumans, more-than-human design perspectives, and pluralist approaches to knowing and doing. Based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, she is a PhD researcher in the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at TU Delft, where her current work focuses on posthuman negotiation of complex intentionalities within and across AI systems.

Seda Özçetin

Seda Özçetin is a designer and researcher continuing her PhD at Umeå Institute of Design as Marie Skłodowska-Curie research fellow of DCODE Network. Her research explores how sustainable and ongoing relations could be formed with connected things moving towards a care-centric aesthetics of relating design program through posthumanist readings and interventions. She is also the co-founder & lead designer of Copenhagen based design studio Hamide creating aesthetics experiences through critical yet playful explorations of everyday tensions.
